When picking a dog I’m sure you want to know what type you should choose in regards to safety and protection. Well, lucky for you I have found the top ten guard dog breeds. These dogs are the best of the best when it comes to home safety. Let’s begin with number 10. This list was developed with help from petmedsonline.org.
#10 Staffordshire Terrier
This breed is sometimes confused with the American Pit Bull. Although they have a lot of similarities they are very different. They were at once raised for hunting big game such as bears but have now been tamed down to be loving family pets. Although many people have certain opinions about these dogs in regards to their aggressive behavior, most owners say that if they are socialized at a young age they grow up to be fine.
#9 Kuvasz
A very strong and loving breed, this animal is very protective of its master and very shy towards non threatening visitors. The Kuvasz is a great dog for children and family members.
#8 Rhodesian Ridgeback
Rhodesian Ridgeback is a very strong hunting dog with an independent nature. They are very smart yet curious when left along by themselves. These dogs do not bark at everything so when you hear your little buddy barking you should pay attention. The Rhodesian Ridgeback will definitely protect you if need be.
#7 German Shepherd
The German Shepherd is famous for its police dog abilities and loving nature (towards family). These dogs are extremely smart and have a strong instinct for protection. When German Shepherds are trained from puppyhood they become a very loving yet protective pet for the family.
#6 Giant Schnauzer
When picking your dog breed, picking the Giant Schnauzer is a good choice. Although they look cute they are a very temperamental dog that requires a lot of attention. They dogs need to be trained from puppyhood and need constant training. They are extremely watchful and make for great guard dogs.
#5 Puli
Don’t be fooled by the look of this pooch. This protective pooch is a great sheep dog and very active at that. Pulis are not a very aggressive dog but because of curiosity they tend to be very good guard dogs.
#4 Komondor
Like the Puli, the Komondor was bred for sheep herding on the Hungarian plains, and they’re a lot more active than their appearance would indicate. Unlike the Puli the Komondor can be very aggressive if their master or domain feel threatened. The Komondor is well known for its courage, independent thinking, and loyalty.
#3 Rottweiler
The Rottweiler is on the top ten list of the smartest dogs in the world. The Rottweiler is in fact number nine on the list. On top of being one of the smartest those little guys are brave too. The Rotty has the best of both worlds: very calm and loving with their family, but at the same time, fiercely protective. These dogs aren’t no joke, they back up all their bark with a very strong body and extremely high resistance to pain. When trained early these are one of the best family/guard dogs in the world.
#2 Doberman Pinscher
Louis Doberman of Apolda, Germany, began trying to breed a giant terrier about 1875. He wanted a guard and working dog with the agility of the terrier. He used Rottweiler, Greyhound and Terrier blood to create the Doberman (left) that we know today. Dobermans do tend to vary in temperament depending on the individual, but a typical Doberman will not hesitate to attack if it believes its family is in danger. These cute pups are the fifth smartest dog breed on the list.
#1 Bullmastiff
Number one on our list is the Bullmastiff (right), a breed that is actually 40% Bulldog and 60% Mastiff. A typical Bullmastiff is loyal, courageous and intensely loyal to its family, with a very strong protective instinct. Along with biting, they tend to defend their territory in an unusual way - using their great strength to knock intruders over, and pin them to the ground! Or they will defiantly stand in the intruder’s path and won’t let them pass. Bullmastiffs do have a natural wariness of strangers, but love spending time with their family and dislike to be left alone.
There you have it. You now have a list of the top ten guard dogs to choose from. Please leave a comment in the comment section below if you have any questions.
A total of fourteen expert dog trainers (including police dog trainers) were consulted to compile this list of the top ten best guard dog breeds. During their evaluation they considered not only a dog’s temperament and physical strength, but its courage, loyalty, and resistance to pain. There are some dogs who possess all of these qualities but didn’t make the list because of their small size. Chihuahuas, most breeds of Terriers, and Miniature Schnauzers are certainly brave, but unfortunately can easily be dealt with by an intruder.
