Top Ten Guard Dog Breeds!

Posted by User Image On April - 24 - 2009

When picking a dog I’m sure you want to know what type you should choose in regards to safety and protection. Well, lucky for you I have found the top ten guard dog breeds. These dogs are the best of the best when it comes to home safety. Let’s begin with number 10. This list was developed with help from petmedsonline.org.

#10 Staffordshire Terrier
This breed is sometimes confused with the American Pit Bull. Although they have a lot of similarities they are very different. They were at once raised for hunting big game such as bears but have now been tamed down to be loving family pets. Although many people have certain opinions about these dogs in regards to their aggressive behavior, most owners say that if they are socialized at a young age they grow up to be fine.

#9 Kuvasz
A very strong and loving breed, this animal is very protective of its master and very shy towards non threatening visitors. The Kuvasz is a great dog for children and family members.

#8 Rhodesian Ridgeback
Rhodesian Ridgeback is a very strong hunting dog with an independent nature. They are very smart yet curious when left along by themselves. These dogs do not bark at everything so when you hear your little buddy barking you should pay attention. The Rhodesian Ridgeback will definitely protect you if need be.

#7 German Shepherd
The German Shepherd is famous for its police dog abilities and loving nature (towards family). These dogs are extremely smart and have a strong instinct for protection. When German Shepherds are trained from puppyhood they become a very loving yet protective pet for the family.

#6 Giant Schnauzer
When picking your dog breed, picking the Giant Schnauzer is a good choice. Although they look cute they are a very temperamental dog that requires a lot of attention. They dogs need to be trained from puppyhood and need constant training. They are extremely watchful and make for great guard dogs.

#5 Puli
Don’t be fooled by the look of this pooch. This protective pooch is a great sheep dog and very active at that. Pulis are not a very aggressive dog but because of curiosity they tend to be very good guard dogs.

#4 Komondor
Like the Puli, the Komondor was bred for sheep herding on the Hungarian plains, and they’re a lot more active than their appearance would indicate. Unlike the Puli the Komondor can be very aggressive if their master or domain feel threatened. The Komondor is well known for its courage, independent thinking, and loyalty.

#3 Rottweiler
The Rottweiler is on the top ten list of the smartest dogs in the world. The Rottweiler is in fact number nine on the list. On top of being one of the smartest those little guys are brave too. The Rotty has the best of both worlds: very calm and loving with their family, but at the same time, fiercely protective. These dogs aren’t no joke, they back up all their bark with a very strong body and extremely high resistance to pain. When trained early these are one of the best family/guard dogs in the world.

#2 Doberman Pinscher
Louis Doberman of Apolda, Germany, began trying to breed a giant terrier about 1875. He wanted a guard and working dog with the agility of the terrier. He used Rottweiler, Greyhound and Terrier blood to create the Doberman (left) that we know today. Dobermans do tend to vary in temperament depending on the individual, but a typical Doberman will not hesitate to attack if it believes its family is in danger. These cute pups are the fifth smartest dog breed on the list.

#1 Bullmastiff
Number one on our list is the Bullmastiff (right), a breed that is actually 40% Bulldog and 60% Mastiff. A typical Bullmastiff is loyal, courageous and intensely loyal to its family, with a very strong protective instinct. Along with biting, they tend to defend their territory in an unusual way - using their great strength to knock intruders over, and pin them to the ground! Or they will defiantly stand in the intruder’s path and won’t let them pass. Bullmastiffs do have a natural wariness of strangers, but love spending time with their family and dislike to be left alone.

There you have it. You now have a list of the top ten guard dogs to choose from. Please leave a comment in the comment section below if you have any questions.

A total of fourteen expert dog trainers (including police dog trainers) were consulted to compile this list of the top ten best guard dog breeds. During their evaluation they considered not only a dog’s temperament and physical strength, but its courage, loyalty, and resistance to pain. There are some dogs who possess all of these qualities but didn’t make the list because of their small size. Chihuahuas, most breeds of Terriers, and Miniature Schnauzers are certainly brave, but unfortunately can easily be dealt with by an intruder.

Home Safety: Part 1, Doors and Windows

Posted by User Image On April - 22 - 2009

OK, I am going to start this series off by telling you a little story. This is something that happened roughly six months ago and I thought it would be wise to teach people about it so it doesn’t happen to them.

About six months ago I was coming home from staying the night at my girlfriend’s house. When I pulled up into the driveway I noticed that my back door was propped open and the window next to it was perched up. Immediately I thought it might have been my little brother trying to get into the house because he forgot something. When I went into the house I noticed that nothing from the window seal was necessarily broken, but nicely placed on the kitchen counter. As I walked into my living room I almost fainted. My big screen TV was gone. Now, this TV wasn’t a newer model big screen it was one of the old ones that weighed several hundred pounds. Anyway, I proceeded to run upstairs and saw the same disaster. All of my office belongings were gone; computer, two monitors, printer, DVD burners, etc.

While prying a little further into the office I noticed that my three hundred pound safe was gone too. Also, while looking I noticed my video camera was gone as well as a few other non important items.

After I noticed everything that was stolen I called the police and made my statement. After three hours of crap including canceling my credit cards (they were in the safe), calling the insurance company, and dealing with CSI like investigators, I was finally done.

Here is what I want to teach you. On a scheduled basis make sure you check your doors and windows to maintain security.

The problem I had was old employees. I ran my landscaping business out of my home and often let fellow employees come in for a bit while I was getting things ready. While one of them were in my house they must have unlocked the window. Since they were there they had a general idea of when I was home and when I stayed at the girlfriend’s house. Once the window was unlocked they waited until my scheduled overnight stay and took me for everything I was worth.

Rule number one is to NEVER let an employee in your house, especially new ones. Rule number two is ideally have you business meeting place somewhere else other than your home. And the third rule is to check all of your window locks before going on a trip or anywhere you might be gone for the night.

Because of my carelessness it cost me near $7000.00 in stolen property, not to mention the time wasted. Just be sure you have a plan of action and stick to it. If you have an alarm in your house then that’s great. If not just periodically check everything and you should be fine. I will have part two of this series up by the end of the week so check back in for some more articles.

How to Pick the Right Safe!

Posted by User Image On April - 20 - 2009

There are a couple things on Twitter people have been asking me about and one of them is in regards to safes. People want to know which one they should choose and which ones are the best.

This is a very easy question for me since I have had my house broken into and my stuff stolen before. About six months ago someone broke into my house while I was gone and stole upwards of $6000.00 of merchandise from me. The one thing they stole that I thought they would never be able to take was my 300 pound safe.

This safe took both me and two other people to get it upstairs and in my office. Just the sheer size of it made me think that it was never going anywhere. Little did I know size didn’t matter much. They came in and took the safe and somehow got it open from the remnants I found the next street over.

Anyway here is what I recommend when buying a safe.

1.) Make sure it is heavy and that it has bolts included that can be bolted to the floor. This was the part of the equation I neglected when I brought my safe home. Once a safe is stolen there is a 75% chance they will be able to get into it if they really want whats inside. If its bolted down they pretty much have no chance of getting in unless they are high tech burglars.

2.) Make sure its expensive. My safe was around $300.00 and weighed about 300 pounds. That’s about a dollar a pound which seems to have served myself and fellow friends with safe purchases. You get what you pay for so don’t make the mistake of buying cheap when it comes to a good safe.

3.) Make sure it is fire proof to the highest degree. Usually manufacturers go by the hours a safe can stand being in a fire.

4.) Make sure it is at least water resistant. Water can fit anywhere so don’t go too crazy with this one but at least having one that is resistant is a good idea.

There you have it. If you follow these four rules you should never have a problem with your safe. As always, if you have questions please leave them in the comment section below. If you are looking for a small safe that will hold a little bit of money all while being discrete check this out: Disguised Shelf Safe!
